Fredrik Backman writes with a lightness that is unmatched by any author I have ever read. The way in which he portrays deep human emotion while he simultaneously has you smiling makes for such a profound reading experience. I love the enduring friendships in this book, from the ones cemented through tragedies of childhood, to the unlikely duo of a runaway teenager and a forty year old lost soul. This book will destroy and restore you in equal measure, and the characters draw you in until you feel that you too are “one of us.”
While this should have been a five star read for me, it got long after a while, which did take away from my overall enjoyment of the book. Ultimately, this was a beautiful, heartfelt portrait of love, loss, and true friendship.
