Million-Dollar Throw
by Mike Lupica
Lupica has a solid reputation for writing sports fiction for young adults. Million Dollar Throw is the story of an eighth grade quarterback who finds football to be the one place where he can lose himself in pure pleasure and succeed. He can escape his family's financial troubles and his friend's increasingly debilitating illness. When Alex is selected to throw a football through a target from 30 yards during the halftime of a Patriot's game, he has the chance to win a million dollars. A million dollars could mean a lot of things to his family. With the pressure on, Alex begins to lose the steely focus he always found so reassuring on the gridiron and as his confidence crumbles, so does his throwing accuracy. Will he find a way to win it all? I think this addition will find an equal audience among male and female readers. Although the protagonist is male, his best friend is a girl. And while there is much description of field position, playcalling, football lingo, and Tom Brady, there is also a strong story about friendship and family.
