The Gingerbread Man by John Abbott Nez, Carol North

adventurous funny lighthearted fast-paced

4.0

I stared at the cover of this book for a long time trying to figure out what it was about this gingerbread man that made him so unnerving to me. And finally I realized. It's the eyelashes. Why does this cookie have eyelashes?

Even if the mouth didn't look Like That and this cookie night terror didn't look like it was staring directly into my soul, I think maybe what makes this hit so close to home for me is the undeniable truth that I used to draw eyes like this as a kid. I distinctly remember drawing eyelashes around big circle eyes just like this except I would also draw them on the bottom too, so the eyes just looked like unblinking creepy suns with unnatural pupils.

That being said, the story itself is a decent variation of the classic tale. The kids I read it with enjoyed it a lot even if they also thought the gingerbread man looked creepy.
