As winter approaches a small northern Anishinaabe community is cut off from power. As more time passes and the darkness continues people begin to panic. Food supplies dwindle and the leaders start to lose control. As some community members turn to Anishinaabe traditions hope blossoms, but will they last through the harsh winter?

I went into this one only vaguely remembering my friend who recommended this said it was a post apocalyptic thriller. I’m so glad I went in without reading too much about it because it completely blew me away! I read this is less than 24h, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Rice’s writing is both haunting and hopeful. The atmosphere set up was incredible and the pacing was perfect from start to finish. I loved learning about Anishinaabe traditions and history. My favourite part was the correlation between the characters prophetic dreams and how the story itself unfolded. This was a chilling thriller perfect for this season.

I highly recommend Moon of the Crusted Snow. It deserves all its accolades and more. Thank you @ecwpress for the copy, 5✨!
