This is somehow both the longest book ever written and the best book that I never wanted to end. I am distraught at its passing but also mindful that it’s taken me a full month to read.
Dark and atmospheric, a contemporary gothic novel that seamlessly blends Victoriana and magic with modern prose and structure. I am in awe of these sentences and want to live in these descriptions.
The characters are all despicable and I found myself exclaiming aloud whenever Norrell (or Drawlight or Lysell or anyone) did something heinous, yet again. They carry the plot forward nicely but I want to slap them so much. Why then, did I long to know what would happen next? Why did I keep listening hour after hour (audiobook read wonderfully by Richard Armitage) in the hopes of finding some redeeming qualities in these people?
I was transported to 19th century London and shown magics I could never have dreamed of and I would very much like to go back now please.
