It was a nice little prequel... Not as interesting as the original series but it got the job done and we get to see how Elias grew to doubt the empire which is one of the main conflicts of book one.

I don't really have much to say about this prequel but you don't really need to read it before book one. Ig only read it if you want more of Helene's and Elias' backstory.
