My Book of Life by Angel by Martine Leavitt
5.0
I was doing a school reading contest and this was one of the books in there. In this contest there are groups, and no one wanted to read this book because they didn't know what it was about. So when I got it I was surprised to see the subject and the format. I thought both would be interesting things.
And I am so glad that I got to read this book. It was beautifully written, and it was made deeper and more heartfelt by its format. I found the characters really deep for such "slight of word", and was very impressed with how well done the plot was and how well it moved in its format. I'm always really impressed and blown away by novels in verse (like The Watch That Ends The Night by Allan Wolf). And I really thought the format fitted the character of Angel with how her mind works and the subject, kind of giving it a disjointed, harsh feeling, but also giving it a sense of depth and beauty.
The subject of the story was very eye opening to me, as it truly captured how shattering and lost this situation can be. I had never heard about the Vancouver Eastside murders of women, and this really helped me become informed of a very real thing. This book was amazing.
