The Third Kingdom by Terry Goodkind
1.0
Sigh... I'm so sad that Terry Goodkind's last few novels have forever ruined him for me. I LOVED the Sword of Truth series. For years it was my favorite, my instant go-to series. It had some problems, yes. Richard's non-stop pontification and Kahlan constantly being under threat of rape in nearly every book was tiring. The author also has serious technical writing issues. But I was able to stick with it because the story was just so good from Wizard's First Rule to Confessor (with just a couple of exceptions *cough* Naked Empire *cough*).
Then came Law of Nines, which was different, but still interesting. Then The First Confessor....in which he did not use editors. At that point I saw how much he NEEDED editors. But the story there was fascinating, so with difficulty, I made it through.
Then came the Omen Machine series. It started with an interesting premise... an ancient machine, recently discovered, which generates terrible prophecies. Okay that sounds intriguing. But at that point, ALL the faults in his books are to a head. The way he constantly repeats the same phrases. The way Richard and Kahlan are always being separated and trying to get back to each other (I mean how many times can this happen). The apparent rape fantasy this author harbors. Richard's nonstop talking.... like new characters being introduced simply for Richard to be able to catch up on every tiny thing that has ever happened...chapter after chapter after chapter of exposition dialog. Then killing off some of the best characters in the original series, seemingly for no reason but shock value (Walking Dead style). I hated that trilogy so much I swore I would never buy another Terry Goodkind book.
At ALA I got a free copy of Shroud of Darkness. That's the second book in his newest Nicci Chronicles series. Nicci was one of the more interesting characters from the original series. I hadn't picked up the series because of my hatred of the last books, but since it was free I figured I would check it out. Today I picked up the first one in the series at the library.
I made it through 1 and a half pages before one of the characters said something so beat-you-over-the-head-with-my-character-traits stupid that I slammed the book shut, fuming.
I cant believe how much this writing has deteriorated. It wakes me so irrationally angry. So much so that I wrote this huge post about it.
Terry Goodkind. Please. Stop. Writing.
