Hidden Empire by Kevin J. Anderson

3.0

I forgot just how slow this series starts. For the first third of this book I found it hard to engage with the story, but once introductions were over and the setting had been established I found it just as entertaining as the first time I read it.

Hidden Empire is the first of seven books in Anderson's epic Saga of Seven Suns and it doesn't shy away from including colossal scenes and numerous plot twists. The cast of characters is enormous, which while allowing for the reader to see the bigger picture and witness events from different perspectives leaves us with slightly two-dimensional characters. This, combined with Anderson's tendency to explain character traits to us through the narrative (rather than showing those traits in action) means the characters are hard to grow attached to.

Despite the above shortcomings I really enjoyed rereading this book. Both the setting and the plot are top notch.
