Sadly, this book was not for me. The writing was flowery and poetic, and I really liked that aspect, but I just could not get into the story. Maggie was young, but Theo was not, and somehow, he was more immature than she was. There was a lot of typical virginal FMC / playboy MMC with secret trauma situations, but I didn’t find any of the characters particularly likable, so that made it difficult to see past the trope. I wasn’t rooting for anyone. They all just seemed a little miserable.
There was an overall feeling of melancholy throughout the entire story, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it would have been nice to have some levity at some points. It made it a bit difficult to finish.
I also wasn’t a huge fan of the pacing. It seemed like we got hints of what the main characters were dealing with throughout the book, and then as soon as there was a revelation, it was over. And I didn’t love the ending, though I suppose it was maybe the most realistic ending for these characters. But I do wish we got something a bit more satisfying.
Overall, I don’t agree with the reviews that say this is just about hooking up in Italy. Because there wasn’t actually very much hooking up. There were a couple of spicy scenes, but nothing crazy.
The audiobook narration was well-done, so that was a win. The narrators appropriately conveyed the melancholy feel of the story.
