Break my heart why don't you!
This novel explored so many questions that felt very real to me. For that same reason, people who don't like reading books about flawed characters will struggle with this one. At times I disliked nearly every character in this book, but I disliked them the way you sometimes dislike an old friend who you still deeply understand and are rooting for.
I'd be interested to read more from this writer. The food descriptions alone really got me and the way friendships and even therapy sessions are described felt so true to life. Each character is grappling with the types of questions that my friends and I grapple with daily: how can I find a job that aligns with my values? How can I be more of myself and still be loved? What if what I want most in life hurts those closest to me?
This book was deeply painful at some points but ends on a hopeful note. I'd recommend it to Sally Rooney fans. I'd also recommend it to anyone looking to read more queer stories and read about trans characters outside of the more stereotypical narrative.
