The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

4.0

As a cool, creepy take on Celtic mythology, I enjoyed The Replacement. Mackie Doyle was an interesting character, especially because he compellingly straddled the gap between the humans in the town of Gentry and the Others, led by the Morrigan and the Lady, who keep the town prosperous in exhange for the sacrifice of a child every seven years.I liked the concept of human sacrifice being an unsaid agreement on both sides to keep the peace and Mackie's (and his friends') struggle against the idea. My only gripe is Tate, the love interest. She's a strong female character and I wanted to like her but it too often felt like she was a bitch just to be a bitch. I never really sympathized with her as a character and she was really the only character that didn't have much of a redeeming quality for me. Even the Lady's motivations and actions were easier for me to get. :P All of that aside though, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes creepy, different takes on fantasy and magical realism, it's very well done.
