A Different Beautiful: Discovering and Celebrating Beauty in Places You Never Expected by Courtney Westlake

5.0

This book is about one mother’s experience raising a daughter who has a severe skin disorder. She describes not just the typical challenges most parents experience with children or the special attention she has to give her daughter to care for her needs to survive but also with how other people react to her daughter and the “abnormality” of her appearance. I use quotes because she does touch on points in the book how we as a community should understand that everyone is unique and diverse. Her daughter looks “different” but so does everyone else in the world. I know I’m verbalizing the message this mother is trying to send in an obvious manner, but the way she explains how she handles how her life has changed with her new baby was extremely emotional and I felt it in every word she wrote. I felt shock, sadness, joy, and frustration through the book. I definitely recommend this book.
