Bear by Julia Phillips
4.5

Enthralling novel about two San Juan Island sisters dealing with their mother’s terminal illness, perpetual money worries, and a bear who shows up. I liked this one a lot - enjoyed the story, the complex relationships, and the deft amping of dramatic tension. I found myself speaking to the characters as I listened to the book - a sign that I was really into in. The local (to me) feeling was affecting too - I live on a different island in the Puget Sound and often find myself on the ferries that feature prominently in this book. The class struggle she writes about is very present here, and opened my eyes a bit more to it. Really liked the writing - poignant and very efficient. The way the author skillfully interleaves character inner voice and dialogue is often moving, sometimes riveting. Worth a read.
