The Apprentices by Maile Meloy
3.0

I love that this YA series focuses on a STEM-loving girl who is at least as interested in her Bunsen burners as she is in boys. And the spells pick up where Hogwarts left off, transforming characters into birds, fish, and two-way mirrors. It just suffers the same problem of every Book 2 of a three part trilogy. It's not quite as fresh as Book 1, and from the midpoint on, you know the author is just positioning characters into place for what will probably be a rollicking Book 3. Fine, but on its own just not 4-star worthy.
