“Stories are told to make you feel something, and they can tell ours over and over again.”
Fans of Scarlet and Lady Thief are going to be delighted by this final book in the series. It’s filled with all the things we enjoyed in the first two books, and all the things we love about Scarlet, Rob, and the entire cast of characters.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot because I enjoyed jumping in to Lion Heart without knowing much of anything, and I want other readers to have the same experience with the end of this journey.
However, what I will say is how much my love for Scarlet has been reinforced through this final book. She is as feisty and fierce as ever. Her loyalty to those she cares about is unwavering, as is her love for Robin. She is one of my favorite YA female characters and I so enjoyed watching her grow from the beginning of Scarlet to the end of Lion Heart. Her strength, heart, and wit place her among the best YA heroines.
And, of course, her relationship with Rob is a big part of her story and this final book. I love Rob almost as much as I love Scarlet, and his growth and maturity is also worth noting as he adjusts to life as the Sherriff as well as with Scarlet’s absence from Nottingham. His devotion and love for Scarlet, and his ability to love who she is – the good and the bad – makes my heart burst. There are so many lovely moments between Rob in Scarlet in Lion Heart, including one in particular which was so beautiful to read due to how much we have grown to love these two characters.
The secondary characters (some of them new) are fantastic, as they add to the story and serve as a wonderful support system to Scarlet, Rob, and their cause. It was wonderful particularly to see Much and how he has matured since the early days of the first book. Seeing him as his own man was one of my favorite parts of Lion Heart. And, of course, Eleanor is true to form with her savvy quips and advice. I don't think I'd turn down an opportunity to read novellas about any and all of the secondary characters ... just saying.
My only complaint is minor, and deals with the final chapter. Maybe I just wanted MORE because I wasn’t ready to walk away from these characters. But, I did feel that the ending was a bit rushed and abrupt, and I would have rather seen something to flesh out the final moments a bit more.
But, having said that, Lion Heart will be enjoyed by those who have fallen in love with Scarlet and Rob. It is great storytelling, filled with adventure, romance, and a classic battle of good against evil. Much like the original legends themselves are timeless, so is this final chapter of the series and the themes found within it.
A.C. Gaughen is a talented writer and has created such a rich world. Her descriptions of the forest and Nottingham have always been descriptive but, in Lion Heart, so many elements are richly written and brought to life. I could clearly see Major Oak, the English countryside, and all the characters. I can't wait to see what she writes next!
