kamckim 's review for:
Jude the Obscure
by Thomas Hardy
People write PhD theses about Thomas Hardy. There is a reason. This book is a classic. For fun, if I were teaching a class on the novel or modern lit, I'd pair this one with THE AWAKENING by Kate Chopin. Hardy has more chops as a writer, but it would be interesting to see what other readers think about the ideals of feminism, marriage, etc., both in Victorian England and America just before the turn of the century. I'm happy to have finally read it. I still like TESS more, as it is more romantic then philosophical.
