Homo Deus: A History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari
4.0

This book took a minute to read with so many other things going on in life. But overall, I'd say it was a good read. There were some factual inconsistencies, like the Story of Aaron Swartz and what led Aaron to commit suicide, but overall Harari had some great insights that highlighted the trajectory of history and the dangers that technology has always presented.

Harari published this book in 2016 and looking back, he seemed to have had a good idea of where the world would be heading--for example he predicted that dataism (The region of data) would be useful by all disciplines of study because it provides a useful way for different disciplines to communicate with one another, and he was right. He also talked about how in exchange for surrendering our personal data to large coorperations, such as Sundar Pichai's company, or Mark Zuckerberg's company, we would get access to algorithms that can give us important information about ourselves (whether or not that information will be abused is a different conversation).

One thing Hariri talked about in the book that stuck with me was new proletariat and the new humans to come (with the rich becoming super human because of what their money and access to information gets them and the poor becoming useless because they don't have the skills to compete or be useful in the new world). Ignoring Humanism for a second, I don't want to live in such a world and I'm glad Hariri brought this to my attention as a potential to come down the road.

So please do your part to share information and knowledge with your friends and family, and even those random strangers on the street. Let's keep humans useful because if we don't, it's only a matter of time before we are screwed too.
