When the Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkinson

4.0

Intense. Courageously written? Can I say that? The story was palpable - Iraq, 2002, the US looking for a fight, Saddam’s regime bearing down on the proud people of Iraq - the lives of three women converging in space and time.

Having read “Baghdad Without a Map” previously gave me a richer reading experience here as there is a lot of reference to the golden years of Iraq - the only real light parts of this story, done in flashbacks to that different time.

Not really a feel good story but it had moments of pure humanity and, maybe, warning? Mostly it offers an invaluable story of events and life half a world away.
