Nelson Mandela led a fascinating life - from growing up in a tribal communal family situation to becoming a lawyer, a freedom fighter and prisoner to being elected by Parliament as the first President of a democratic South Africa. His birth name was Rolihlahla. He was given the name Nelson by an English school teacher. His father died when he was 15 years old and he was sent to live with another family where he received a secondary education. He was expelled from college and ran away from home when a marriage was arranged for him. There are so many twists and turns to his life that it is impossible to list them all!
The book is very detailed and the names of people and places are very difficult for an American to pronounce. I think the book is too detailed. I think that every person he spoke to is mentioned!
The trials are very interesting. The discrimination in the 1950s and 60s is incredible! The laws the givernment passed to take away land, homes and rights of Africans is hard to believe. The story of Nelson Mandela's life is astonishing to me!
