It's difficult to judge the first book of a duet without knowing what's going to happen in the next one.
It was a good start to the story, even though the last 10% of the book seemed to go way to fast.
I also see no point why this one character was killed so hastily and without apparent reason. It felt like part of the set up for the next one that had to be crammed into the story.
