The Young Elites
by Marie Lu
I wish I'd never bought it. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of novels written in first person, but will make an exception for an unusual plot and the chance to experience a kick-ass heroine. And that's what I thought I was getting when I saw the great reviews on this and read the description.
I was sorely disappointed in TYE, and my first experience of Marie Lu. I have struggled to finish this, hate leaving any book like that - but ML didn't make this easy. The writing was unemotional and flat, (lots of tell rather than show...) and I found it quite jarring in some places. Some facts didn't even match up IMO (i.e one moment hair is described as copper, the next blonde ...I suppose it depends on your perception of copper curls).
I adore a good villain/anti-hero (YES Loki) - but MC Adelina irritated the hell out of me for all the reasons stated in the passionate & very informative reviews written by Mizuki and Kiki. I don't really need to go into it, they've really said everything I was thinking & thankyou! I thought I was going insane seeing all the rave reviews. Just really disappointed, as could have had so much potential.
