jeuel 's review for:
The Decagon House Murders, Volume 1
by Yukito Ayatsuji
A huge thank you to Kodansha and NetGalley for sending me an eARC to read and give an honest review!
The Decagon House of Murders is a manga adaptation of the best-selling mystery novel by Yukito Ayatsuji.
Seven students, members of their university’s mystery club, go to a remote island and stay there for a week. Six months prior, on the same island, a series of murders and a tragic fire were committed.
While on the mainland, on the same morning the mystery club students arrive on the island, other members receive letters from a dead man who was brutally killed on the island.
Coincident? I think not.
Honestly, I went and read the manga without having prior knowledge of the novel. But since I’m an avid manga reader and the cover really piqued my interest, I gave it a go.
The first volume introduced the characters, building the plot and the unsolved mystery. Reading about the characters and how they adopt a moniker of their favorite mystery novelist was entertaining. Although they have the typical cast—the hot-headed, the pretty one, the jolly one, etc—they are all distinct and unique in their own ways.
What I truly liked about the book is the setting. It is not only set within the island but involves those on the mainland as well. The story makes me want to join the characters and solve the mystery, and all throughout, I was taking notes and searching for clues and simply making my mind work. I was truly engaged.
The art is incredible. The panels give the intense and eerie feeling every reader wants to experience while reading a mystery/thriller novel. The character designs, the setting, it was all done impeccably.
I went and read the first volume of The Decagon House of Murders without prior knowledge, and now, I am truly in need of the second volume and a copy of the novel.
