The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

5.0

Well, fuck me. Every heist, SFF, and "morally gray" book I've ever read pales in comparison to this fcking work of art as if hewn by the divine gods themselves. (Yes, at this point I'm now a disciple of Scott Lynch) Seriously, I implore all of you to drop every book you're reading and go grab a copy of this instead. Thank me later.

The Lies of Locke Lamora is engaging, fast-paced, genius, detailed, and fcking timeless. This was published in 2006 and fast forward 13 years later, the series is still ongoing with huge time gaps, and honestly? I'm not complaining. I can already tell, that I will continue this series until it's finished even if I'm at my 30's when that momentous time comes because folks, I kid you not, THE GENTLEMAN'S BASTARD IS WICKEDLY WORTH IT

I've been trying to dig around the SFF niche lately and while this book holds a lot of praise I was still wary at first. However, if you're like me, fear not my dear friends, upon the first chapter you will definitely be hooked because there is a lot happening in a matter of pages. There are also interludes after every chapter or two that fleshes out the backstories of the Gentleman Bastards that seamlessly connects to the current timeline. It's definitely effective and gives ample space for you to breathe when things get fast and heavy. Plus it's more entertaining this way! The world building is also quite beautiful and does not get in the way with the narrative. The Lies of Locke Lamora is in fact the perfect combination of a plot-driven and character-driven book. IT JUST KEEPS YOU ON YOUR TOES!!!

Most importantly, the Gentleman Bastards themselves are individually endearing and will grow on you. You'll admire them in their genius and flamboyant scheming. You'll pine for them every time there's a close call in their plans. You'll adore their traditions, their quirks, their skill. You'll love them not because they're "morally gray" by the standard but because they are unabashedly wicked and utterly human.

I FCKING LOVE THEM

A solid 5 star! Scott Lynch has my heart. Also, side note: I am utterly attracted to Father Chains AHAHHAHAHAHAHA DANG IT.
