The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker
3.0

Somewhere in a small town college-students mysteriously fall asleep - and cannot be awakened. Just as mysteriously this sickness spreads, and more and more people in the town fall into the deep yet active (brain-wise) slumber. Quarantine is of course soon a fact and the society is slowly falling to pieces.

What I liked most was the poetic prose and unsettling tone the author creates, both very well executed. I enjoy the narrative style following the fate of different characters.

I did however consider some parts weak, like for instance the ending. The author could’ve easily made more poignant allegories and symbols in relation to the sleep, and dug even deeper in our fear. It feels almost like an opportunity lost. Maybe living 1+ year in a pandemic has hardened me? Nonetheless, a good book with an unnerving tone that I enjoyed.
