A Measure of Light: A Novel by Beth Powning
5.0
I knew little of either the Puritans or the Quakers and though Beth Powning's novel is clearly well researched on the history, what I found most interesting was Powning's observations on Mary's situation and the difficult situation she finds herself in; choosing to essentially, abandon her husband and children in pursuit of enlightenment and spreading the word of god.
On the one hand, I admire her devotion to self-discovery and the sacrifices she made for something she believed in so strongly and something which, in the end, also made the world better for her family but on the other but I also kind of resented the fact that she left her family behind for it. Which then led me to think: "Would I feel the same way if she was a man?"
An excellent read.
