Children of Earth and Sky was a wonderful read! I had emotional outbursts and reactions as I read this! Ahh, so good!

The reading experience was like a play, especially in how characters were faded in and out of the main narrative, and how their sub-plots were interwoven into one another. There is a large cast of characters, but it's mainly handful of central characters readers follow. It was initially overwhelming being introduced to so many characters, but as I read more I became invested in all of them. Danica was my favourite character. Strong willed and dedicated, she was also in touch with her own emotional state - never feeling ashamed or discouraged by them. Another character I grew to love was Pero. An artist who finds himself in a life-threatening situation beyond his imagination. I initially found Pero to be annoying but I grew to admire him. He navigates through morally-complicated situations, but ultimately sticks to his fundamentals.

You're going to appreciate the map included in this book! As the cast of characters travels from west to east, they make many stops in between. However, the map also helps to illustrate the geo-political relationships between the city-states and "foreign" empire. The geo-political aspect of the narrative also helps flesh out the backgrounds of each character, and how their origins impact their motivations. And on that note, the motivations of each character were very clear. It's made clear early in the book why and how each come to meet one another or how they came to travel with each other. While it's under secret at first, each of the motivations eventually reveal a more complicated conflict.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. A book this length with such a rich narrative usually takes me a much longer time to read. However, I read this book in chunks because I couldn't put it down. I had me reacting very emotionally at certain points...like going on a small twitter explosion! This is one book I'm definitely going reread - I'm sure I may have missed something.
