If You Still Recognize Me by Cynthia So

3.5

The smell of ink and paper filled the space around her as she shelved the new comics that had just been delivered. There was something comforting about holding these bound pages in her hands and watching the colorful artwork pop on the cover. She was giddy with excitement over this latest edition and couldn’t wait to dive in and celebrate with these characters.

If You Still Recognize Me is a debut YA romance following Elsie who is looking forward to everything summer has in store and maybe finally confessing the feelings she’s been harboring for her friend, Ada… but then a friend from her past comes back into her life and now her feelings are all over the place.

This book has amazing representation and I love that! So many characters to root for and love… all of them discovering and maneuvering through their sexuality and finding their sense of self. I wasn’t a big fan of the side plot of Elsie finding her friend’s grandmother’s ex-friend… it was a bit odd to move the plot with that, but I understood the importance of the additional storyline. I also didn’t like how Elsie treated her one friend, Ritika… her decisions rubbed me the wrong way. Plus for characters 18 years and older… they read younger. Loved the incorporation of comics and fan fiction throughout the story… so fun!

If you’re looking for a queer read with amazing representation by a non-binary debut author… I recommend reading this one!
