I have a soft spot for Maria V Snyder - I fell in love with Poison Study when I was young and read every one of her books after, despite some of them being very flawed. I'm very conflicted about Shadow Study, I was hoping for a triumphant return of her most popular series, but I felt it fell flat. Despite the interesting premise and stronger start, the rest of the book moved along slowly and seemed to be more focused on recapping old events or fleshing out characters backstories (I'm sorry but the Valek backstory just didn't not capture my interest) rather than moving the plot forward. It was hard for me to even push my way through it, I certainly hope that the remaining two improve though I'm not sure if I'll be reading them.
