Nightwing, Vol. 2: Get Grayson by Tom Taylor

5.0

The first issue of this volume was stupendous. Who thinks of making an entire issue as an unending two-page spread panorama? My jaw dropped after the first two spreads, and kept dropping further as I scrolled through each spread. The composition was superb—how did the artists do that? Nightwing and the rest of the characters on the page moved so seamlessly from one spread to the next. And don’t think I missed seeing the city scape—from the BLM poster, to the progress flag, to the homeless community pushing their carts, we saw so much of Blüdhaven, good and bad, in the first 21 pages.

And the reason this kind of single take storytelling works is because of the condensed timeline and high stakes in this issue. So perfect and brilliant. I am floored. Artists deserve to be paid so much more, and given so much more attention, because we’d be getting unimaginable stuff from them if they didn’t have to worry about their pay check, their health, and who is stealing their stuff (looking at you AI).

As for the rest of the issues, all great fun. I like the interlude where Dick hangs out with Jon Kent—but that strand of the story sort of got abandoned, and I don’t know where, if at all, it continued. But it was really nice to see how easygoing Dick and Jon’s interactions were.

I loved seeing Dick and Wally partnering up again, albeit briefly. I love their friendship, and wish we saw more of that. The art changed, so these weren’t the best renditions of Dick and Wally, but not such a change that it impacted my enjoyment of the story.

It’s nice that Babs is working with Dick, and she’s more in Oracle mode. I like that she doesn’t have to be in the field to be the most important member of the Bat-family.

I have genuinely enjoyed the first two volumes of this series. The stakes are high, the art is great, there are so many characters and layers that add dimension to the story. Admittedly, I think Dick was dumb to hold a press conference in front of his apartment building, but aside from that lack of forethought, the characterizations have been amazing, and so have the stories. I’m so glad I got back to reading Nightwing, I’ve missed this!
