pogodragon 's review for:
The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception
by Emmanuel Carrère
I don't usually read true crime books but I followed the author after reading his Dice Man article on the Guardian.
I think part of the reason I tend to bounce off true crime is that a lot of it is written by US journalists and I find the oceans of extraneous detail too tedious to wade through.
This book is refreshingly written in a direct and conversational style and the criminal is not just an evil git. I mean, he is an evil, deceitful, fraudster and narcissist, but he is also interesting to read about. I enjoy the author's style and would definitely read more of what he's written. If you like Louis Theroux documentaries I suspect you'll probably enjoy this writing.
