Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster by Svetlana Alexiévich

5.0

I picked this up after watching Chernobyl on HBO. I knew the show was fictionalized, but seeing the reality of so many of the stories from the show on the page was almost shocking. It's worth coming into this knowing the outlines of what happened, but the author does a great job of representing a wide spectrum of those affected by Chernobyl, from those who lost loved ones and worked at the reactor after the explosion, to the refugees who settled in the Exclusion Zone. Really heartbreaking and maddening in places, but beautiful too.
