There Are No Saints by Sophie Lark
5.0

The art world of San Francisco is dominated by two powerful men: The warm welcoming playboy Alaster Shaw and the cold intimidating reclusive Cole Blackwell. All eyes wait to see what they will do next to one up each other. These seemingly contrasting artists have a similar dark side that recognizes the same depraved soul in the other intensifying their rivalry.

When Mara, a struggling artist, gets ensnared in the middle, she is dragged unknowingly into a world darker than she could have imagined. As Cole becomes obsessed with this girl he finds anyway to put her under his protection & influence where he can study and dissect her more closely. He’s always been a sociopath, studying emotions rather then feeling them. He can’t figure out what is drawing him to Mara and what to do about it. Having an attachment to anything is a weakness he cannot afford. He has staked his claim but will it be to savor or to savage her?

You guys I binged this book in one go. I spent hours deep into the night, heart pounding, pulse racing, thighs clenching desperate to know what was going to happen next. I was teeming with adrenaline as I flipped to the last page disappointed to find there wasn’t more. Yet.

I felt a deep empathy for Mara as she struggled with heightened sensory sensitivity from PTSD. She was damaged but so strong. I mean just the scene where she meets Cole for the first time showed me everything I needed to know about this amazing woman.

Sophie also tackled an important issue that victims, especially poor & female face. It’s sad that while this is a work of fiction, stories like Mara’s aren’t unheard of in our justice system where perpetrators are free to terrorize and victims are twisted with blame.

And don’t think the darkness in this book ends with our rival artists extracurricular activities. The steam is equally dark and deprived though be prepared to wait a little longer for the really good stuff. She really builds these two to a delicious crescendo and trust me when I say that scene is everything.

I give this book all the stars. It captivated me from start to finish and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. This is easily one of my favorite reads of the year. Sophie is an unstoppable force with an incredible range. I don’t even like this subgenre typically but that’s how good this is. Sophie writes an antihero like no other. I may even like him more than Dean (which is basically blasphemy). I cannot wait to see where Sophie takes us with the conclusion.

Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and Sophie Lark for letting me read this early in exchange for a review.
