How do I start this? Ugh, it was me, not you? I can't say that I didn't like the story as a whole, but it just wasn't as exciting and interesting as book 1 and the novella. Add to that the fact that I just couldn't get myself to like Jake no matter how much I tried and here we are, 10 hours later and I still have no idea how I fell about it. But here it goes. I guess.
Spoilers ahead~
The only things that made me finish the book was the absolutely unhinged killer (points for not making it obvious) and Kallie- especially Kallie's humor. She was such a mood sometimes that it almost made it worth it losing 4 hours of my life ("She wouldn't be getting her throat ripped out tonight, and wasn't that a shame.") Courageous and a protective friend, Kallie was a sweetheart. I also enjoyed her talking back. Here are some quotes:
"More? Please. Sir." And may God strike you dead if you keep this up."
"So, so sorry. Really sorry. Master. Sir. Emperor of the world. God of the Universe." She managed to clamp her mouth shut before adding, Fucking sadistic bastard." And if you listen close enough, you can still hear me cackling in the distance.
I also partially liked how the book treated Kallie's abandonment issues, but the whole they-loved-you-all-along thing seemed a bit forced and I just can't help but think that it would've made better sense to have her last foster parents genuinely not like her and have her find a loving and accepting family at last. The family talk broke my little black heart and made me cry.
Nitpickings and other things that pulled me out of the story:
-Jake referred to women as 'wenches' in the beginning; I get that he was trying to be funny but I was instantly transported to a historical novel with pirates.
-Kallie insisting that she's a professional and wanting to prove herself, only to jump straight into kinky sex with Jake not even 10 minutes later.
-Jake's sexist comments about Kallie's way of dressing (I would've put his head through a wall, soldier or not soldier. I don't care about men who tell their women how to dress like their opinion matter whatsoever.)
-the he-likes-you girl talk, this time provided by Becca;
-I guessed the reason why Mimi died the moment the killer appeared;
-the sex scenes- to be honest, I've read fanfics that had better written sex scenes.
Oh, well. I'm off to read Virgil's novella. Peace out✌
