Naomi's Room
by Jonathan Aycliffe
I was plagued all afternoon with a sense of foreboding. You know that feeling when you think something bad is going to happen and it completely unsettles you? All the long work day, that was me. Not being able to put my finger on it, and anxiety taking control of my body, I couldn't help but say to my co-workers, "Shit, I'm going to get in a car crash in this downpour today, aren't I?" The feeling was that bad.
Then on my break, while I heated my lunch in the microwave, I took my current read out of my bag....and it all made sense to me....
Naomi's Room is the creepiest thing I have ever read in my life. The darkness in this book managed to escape the pages and swallow me whole. I struggle rectifying the fact that I gave this a 5-star rating knowing the depravity that met me during the second half of this book. But it was just. that. good.
The first half of Naomi's Room is eerie, spooky, creepy and every other element that makes up the quintessential ghost story. But the second half.... well, that was just downright disturbing as hell. If you are all about the spooky, the bloodshed, the haunting treks up to a cold, dark, foreboding attic (and if you are not the least bit squeamish) then this is the book for you. But if you are faint of heart and don't enjoy spending a few sleepless nights, cowering under your bed covers, then I would think twice before picking this one up. Personally, I could have done without that heavy sense of foreboding today, but I absolutely loved this book. Best horror book I have ever read, hands down.
