Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician by Sandeep Jauhar

2.0

As much as I wanted to like this book, and as many problems there are in modern American medicine, I just couldn't really get into it. Most of the book is how Dr. Jauhar is trying to make money in somewhat shady operations--because he and his wife (also a doctor) are having troubles making ends meet. Why is that? A series of personal choices that his family makes, including wanting to live in Manhattan, send his kids to private school, physician wife who is not working at the time, etc. It's really more trying to live beyond your means. If he had taken the advice he mentions throughout the book, and figuring out what's really important, then the solution to a lot of these problems would be more clear. That becomes clear at the end of the book, when he finally moves out of Manhattan and into somewhere more livable for him. As a physician myself, the world he describes is almost completely foreign to me--and I suspect a lot of lay readers will have trouble sympathizing with the hard life of a two-physician household trying to make ends meet.

His writing is engaging and fluid, hence the only stars I can give.
