Uncle Tom's Cabin
by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Really an incredible overview of the thoughts and philosophies around slavery at the time, with characters to represent different schools of thought. We’ll written in prosaic language and, for the audiobook, really beautifully narrated. Colored by the Christianity of the author, it sets up the main character as the ideal long suffering and accepting slave who ultimately gives his life for the freedom of others. I can see why Uncle Tom is used as a slur for those who accept the racism and classism of whites and try to make them better, despite the evil they do. Also an interesting take on the movement to get freed slaves to go to Liberia. Although Stowe seems to support that movement she advocates for educating blacks before sending them.
