Whew. This was heartbreaking but also so good! I read The Nickle Boys so I thought this was going to be similar. It was in some ways but also a very different story.
While there are paranormal elements in this book, what these boys endure is horrific! And the fact that we know boys were abused at these types of schools makes it that much more disturbing.
From early on, I cared about Robbie. He's a sweet and innocent kid who finds himself in a very difficult situation. I actually got really emotional during a few of the scenes!
And Gloria’s determination to save her brother was equally moving.
I listened to this on audio and so glad that I did. The book has short chapters (10 - 15 ish pages) but is a little long. The audio kept me interested and was a great experience. Also knowing that this was inspired by a relative of Due who was sent to the Dozier School for Boys made this book so much more impactful.
