The Unexpected Everything
by Morgan Matson
So, so, SOO good!! Wow, I had high expectations for this (thanks to Hailey in Bookland haha), and was so happy to find all of them met!
When I think about the quintessential YA contemporary, this automatically ticks all of the proverbial boxes in my book: Set in a small town with a cozy feel to it? ✔ A large group of really amazing friends? ✔ Perfect, swoon-worthy romance with the two main leads having GREAT chemistry? ✔ Relatable parent-child relationship? ✔ Really funny, and realistic humor/dialouge ✔ Angst galore?✔✔!
This was just such an amazing read. I can't put into words how much I enjoyed every second of it. There was not a dull moment throughout, the plot didn't drag in the least, and I actually came to equally love and care for ALL of the characters. I could really relate to Andie's rocky relationship with her father, and I loved how in the end, they worked everything out and were in a healthy father-daughter dynamic again.
I also really, REALLY enjoyed the ending. In most books, the characters almost always make up in the end. But I really liked how Matson didn't make it so for Tobey and Bri. It made the book, and the friendship between the two of them, seem even more real. I could relate to their 'break-up' at the end in many ways. But, like Tobey said at the end- sometimes taking time away from the friend you love is good. Sometimes, it puts things into perspective and let's you find yourself again out of the friendship. I don't know, I really loved that aspect of the story, and found it so relatable!
Romance was really amazing. Andie was amazing through it all, and I thought Clark was so funny and cute - and HELLO, an author?!? YES!!
