this book is very popular and has been summed up very roughly by a lot of people so the idea of this book in my head loomed large while i was reading it, and unfortunately it didn’t hold up. interesting anecdotes and thoughtful discussion, but based on the online chatter i thought this book was about cancel culture and it’s truly not. it’s really about (who could have guessed?) shame. it’s only really in the afterword that cancel culture is ever really discussed, and i think more of that is what i wanted from this book. but i suppose it’s unfair to expect that, given that’s not the point of the book. oh well!
