Heartless by Marissa Meyer
5.0

Finished this book on the day it came out ~ but took a few days to digest.

Absolutely, absolutely amazing.

You go into this book, and practically the first third or even half of the book has nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland or how the Queen of Hearts became who she is. Random Cheshire moments, late night endeavors, awkward conversations with suspiciously strange people, and of course, mad tea parties.

But nothing connected to anything - until the later half of the book. This is a book of riddles and magic and puzzles. This is Wonderland. It's meant to be crazy and confusing, although in Heartless, there's the added component of tragic. Marissa Meyer lays out all these pieces and chunks of information, and she ties it all together in the end. Not only that, but her characters - primary and secondary - are all phenomenal.

Cath - She's the main character, Lady Catherine Pinkerton. Intelligent, quirky, beautiful, and a talent for baking, along with what all teenagers experience ~ the need to live up to her parents' expectations, which in this case, is to marry the king and be Queen of Hearts.

Jest - Jest, Jest, Jest. I cry.

Hatta - Better known as the Mad Hatter. He has an interesting backstory, and it's fun to delve into his mind during a time when he was not mad.

Raven - the usually silent companion of Jest. He shares some of Cath's darker traits, and it's because of this that both he and Cath go off, shall I say, the deep end.

Should you read this book: I'll warn you that the ending is not in anyway happy like it was in the Lunar Chronicles. Ready a box of tissues. You'll be sniffling and bawling your way through the last 10% of the book.

"It was a new day in Hearts, and she was the Queen."
