Someone needs to get Murtagh some better shoes. He spends 1/4 of this book falling down.
It’s been years since I finished the Inheritance series, with Eragon being a particularly influential book for me when I was young. I got older, as most of us do, and read the whole series in one go once Inheritance came out, and I remember being a bit let down. I still enjoy Eragon quite a bit though.
When I saw this on the shelf, my interest was definitely peaked, like my 12 year old self was peering through my eyes, so I figured, why not?
Paolini has definitely improved as a writer, and most of this story moved pretty quickly. He did get bogged down in some circular writing around the 400 page mark, as he did in the Eragon follow ups, but I think he landed the ending pretty well.
I do think think the placement of the sword renaming scene was incredibly odd, taking out a book and doing this while a friend was potentially going to die, kind of undercut the tension of the mounting action for me. But that’s honestly my biggest complaint.
All and all, I enjoyed my return to Alagaësia, and will definitely check out any further adventures if they come.
