This is my first read by the author, AJ Locke, and I found it enjoyable. There are a lot of paranormal and mystic creatures that are mentioned in the book. I'm not sure if this is tied to any real mythic or folklore from a culture or not. But I enjoyed Magic Dark, Magic Divine. It has action, good characters, touches of romance and a strong connection to family and found family. Penn's life story of being from one world and waking up in a new one was interesting and I felt for the loss she encountered and the difficult choices she had to make.

The were a few plot points I could anticipate midway through the book and like Penn's character Collen's character had to grow on me too. I know there's a second book in this series and I've added it to my tbr.
