As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

4.0

3.5 rounded up. A dark, terrifying conclusion to Pip’s story filled with dread, hopelessness, RX drug abuse, lying, and murder (obs). Def not in YA category for this series finale. Pip is sent in a ghastly spiral that seems too heavy for readers younger than 18.

I can see why Jackson took Pip down this road as far as character development, but I kind of hate it. It’s realistic - of course Pip would have PTSD from the events in the first and second books, but man, Jackson just sucked all the light out of her previously fierce character. I was so disappointed with Pip’s choices and how unrealistic the story seemed at times. Pip turned into the villain, someone that she would do her podcast about. A very grim full circle for Jackson’s teen MC.

That last line, though. Oof, my heart jumped through the ceiling. It took the book from 2 stars to 3.5 because that’s the GGGTM atmosphere we know and fell in love with.
