Winter Is Coming: The Medieval World of Game of Thrones by Carolyne Larrington

3.0

Larrington serves as a tour guide to the world of Westeros and Essos, informed by her knowledge of medieval Europe's history and customs. While some of her analogies are clearer and more powerful than others (she gives an inordinate amount of influence to Chaucer), this is overall a strong introduction to the real life antecedents for such elements as wargs, green seers, direwolves, the Bank of Braavos and the Wall, as well historical events which likely inspired the Red Wedding, and the War of the 5 Kings.

Unfortunately, this book was completed after the 5th novel but before the final 2 seasons of the television show, meaning several of Larrington's predictions have proven false. It's been 5 years: time for an update!
