The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

Family dynamics are my favorite thing to read about and wow did this book deliver on everything from hard-hitting emotional blows to the softest, fluffiest interactions.

I can definitely see how the story might move too slowly for some people’s taste, but the interpersonal relationships were so incredibly well written and the subject matter so important that I really flew through this book. Thomas does a perfect job weaving lighter moments in between the very heavy, deeply moving scenes.

While I do think some of the scenes were a bit too on the nose for what point they were trying to get across, since this is a young adult novel and may very well be a younger reader’s first real exposure to these topics in literature, I understand why they are written that way.

Overall, I absolutely think this is a must read for everyone, and a must reread for me again because I love all the characters so much I don’t think I’m quite ready to say goodbye.
