Sophie's Choice by William Styron

2.0

So. That was a struggle. I can't remember ever feeling this conflicted about one book. I was very interested in Sophie's story, and also her relationship with Nathan. However, two things ruined the book for me: Stingo and the writing. They go together a bit, as especially Stingo rambling on was written in such long uncomprehensible sentences that I often found myself just skimming over these parts. I almost abandoned the book after a few chapters, it was Sophie's story that kept me going. Towards the end I was less troubled by Stingo and the writing, I don't know if I got used to it or there was less of it. I would have liked it much better if it was just the story of Sophie and Nathan (even if told from the perspective of Stingo), but without everything else that involved just Stingo. So, in the end, 4 stars for Sophie (and Nathan), 1 star for Stingo and the writing, and 2 stars for the story in general.
