Blood of the Earth
by Faith Hunter
4.5 stars. Rounding up because it's been awhile since I've given anything 5 stars. (Arbitrary? Who, me?)
I was hesitant to start this because Ricky was mentioned on the back blurb and I really don't like him. But no worries, he's not a romantic lead and at one point Nell literally kicks him in the balls.
There are some romantic elements, but a lot more of the story is about sisterhood and family and belonging. I really enjoyed that.
The world and writing are dark, lush, and beautifully described, like you'd expect from this author.
Content warning: References to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, including abuse of children.
