Gerald grows up with his aunt until he is nine, and has to move back with his mother and little sister Angel. Gerald's stepfather Jordan is abusive and beats Gerald. Eventually Angel admits to Gerald that Jordan has been touching her, and Gerald has to decide if he will turn Jordan in or not.

I can imagine why this book is interesting to students. It is on an accessible reading level (780 Lexile), and moves from event to event very quickly. For me personally, I have a hard time reading about abuse; it makes me angry and depressed. Seriously, people should have to get a license before they reproduce.
