Falling into You by Lauren Abrams
5.0
4.5 stars -- I started this book at 10pm, which is a mistake when you have to work at 4:30am.... My husband came to bed, and I told him this book was so bad b/c it was so good I didn't want to put it down. And seriously, the first 70% had me just perma-grinning all over the frickin place. There was just something so endearing about Hallie....she was so much of what Chris described her as, just genuine and real and I would love to have her as a friend. She was not without her own flaws, but those would become clearer further into the book. And Chris?? Oh wow, just dreamy sigh all over that. There was something just so....I was going to say sad and needy, but that doesn't sound like a good thing? He was just that bit of broken, but you could tell he hungered for the goodness in life. He was just so lost. The banters and interactions between the 2 of them, especially on that first perfect day just filled my heart with light and goodness....
At a certain point, even though there were hints, this book became a lot deeper than I was expecting. It just started out so light that I wasn't sure if it was going to go where the hints were leading, or if it would just be my happy love book. But it did delve deeper. And it was kind of hard, b/c I already loved the characters, but they were making such bad choices (some epically bad choices), and it was hard to watch. The funny thing is, the author had already sucked you into sympathizing with them both, so while what they were doing were at times cringe-worthy, you couldn't help but want that elusive happy ending (even if you couldn't figure out how that could happen). And the ending itself was interesting. It was kind of real. I can't go into it, b/c I Just don't feel like clamping spoilers around it, but I was both disappointed and yet relieved to have an ending that wasn't perfect. And then to find out it was a part 1 (ish)?? ANd then the snippet of the next book?? ARGH! Talk about a buy now right from my kindle moment.
So yeah. A great section of utter awesomeness....then some real human moments that could make you frustrated and cringey....then a strangely only semi-fulfilling ending....then hope...then....well, I guess we'll see eh?
